Adoption program
The SMVHS operates an adoption program for cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies. Pet owners who must relinquish a pet because they can no longer care for it may apply to have their pet accepted into our adoption program. They will be asked to complete a relinquishment form, provide copies of all medical records if possible, and will be asked to make a donation to help us care for their pet. In return they will then be assured that we will provide excellent care for this pet until a suitable, permanent home is found for them.
Families or individuals who would like to add a pet to their household are encouraged to visit our shelter to see if a cat or dog staying with us will be a good match for their lifestyle and home. After at least one visit to the shelter, if you find there is a pet you would like to bring into your home, potential adopters are required to fill out an adoption application. |
 |
A committee meets on a regular basis to make the determination that an adoption request is the best match possible for the potential owner and the pet in question. In completing the adoption form, please provide as much information as possible to ensure that you are the right match for the pet you are interested in. Once the committee approves the adoption and all relevant housing obligations have been met, the adopter will complete the paperwork, pay the adoption fee and take their new family member home.
For 2008, adoption fees are as follows:
- Cats/kittens: $50.00
- Dogs/puppies: $65.00 ***
**** a $10.00 collar deposit is added to this fee which is refunded when the Humane Society collar is returned.
Pets adopted from the SMVHS are current on all of their vaccinations, have been spayed or neutered, and have been treated with a monthly flea prevention medication. New adopters may also take their pet to one of our veterinarian partners for a free Health Check within the first 72 hours of adoption to determine if there are any health issues a new pet owner should be made aware of.

Spay and Neuter Program

|
The SMVHS has operated a low cost spay and neuter clinic since 1998. Procedures for healthy cats and dogs are available by appointment Monday through Friday and are performed by fully licensed and experienced veterinarians. At the time of a spay/neuter procedure, low cost vaccinations can also be given for an additional fee. Because we are a clinic and not a full service veterinarian office we are unable to perform spay/neuter procedures on the following types of animals:
- dogs under 10 lbs.
- flat faced cats or dogs including the following:
- Dogs: Pekinese, Lhasa, Apso, Shih Tzu, Pugs, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, Silky Terrier, Poodles, Chihuahua, Pomeranian
- Cats: Persian, Himalayan
- dogs or cats who are in poor health
- animals over age 6 or who are obese or emaciated
|
Please call during regular SMVHS business hours to schedule an appointment to have your cat or dog spayed or neutered.
We also partner with Catalyst for Cats and The Feline Network to provide spay/neuter services for feral cats. If you have feral cats on your property, or would like to assist with any Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) programs, please contact the above agencies or contact the SMVHS for more information. |

Animal Welfare Education Program
We helpto educate the community about the importance of spaying and neutering pets to control the pet overpopulation problem and to teach children and adults about how to be the most responsible pet owners they can be. If you would like to schedule a classroom visit, after school presentation, or adult education workshop, please call the SMVHS to make arrangements. Groups and organizations are also invited to make appointments to tour our shelter and learn, first hand, what we do to serve animals and the community. |
The Pet Project
The Pet Project is still in the major gift stage of the Capital Campaign and donors who contribute a major gift or make a significant pledge during this period will be given the opportunity to name one of the rooms or spaces in the new facility. What a wonderful chance to memorialize a loved one—either 2-legged or 4-legged. If a major gift is something you would like to consider, please contact George Cudd or Kelly White O’Neill who will happily meet with you about this charitable giving opportunity. |
