Your gift saves lives. The Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is a private, We need your help to do this important work. SMVHS receives no government funding, nor are we funded by or affiliated with any national animal welfare organizations. We count on the generosity of people like you to save these innocent lives. Can you help? Please consider a gift today. Your contribution is tax-deductible, and truly makes a difference. On behalf of the animals, THANK YOU! ![]() CONSTRUCTION FOR NEW ANIMAL CARE FACILITY NOW UNDERWAY Follow our progress by visiting our blog: http://www.smvhspetproject.blogspot.com Animal overpopulation in Northern Santa Barbara County is at a crisis level, due in part to an expanding population, a high degree of poverty, a lack of public understanding, and insufficient resources to address the problem. In 2010, 77.3% of all dogs and cats euthanized in Santa Barbara County were from the Santa Maria area. The Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is working hard to curb this crisis by improving our efficiencies, by collaborating with other area animal welfare agencies, and by building a new shelter and spay/neuter clinic to double our ability to save lives and curb animal overpopulation. ![]() PET PROJECT is the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society’s ambitious effort to build and relocate to a much needed new animal adoption complex and spay/neuter clinic in the community. Our current facility on Black Road has been in operation since 1986, and was built to serve a significantly smaller population in the community service area in northern Santa Barbara County and southern San Luis Obispo County. As this area grows in human population, the animal population grows as well. PET PROJECT is our response to this growing need and will enable the SMVHS to receive and adopt out twice as many dogs and cats, and greatly enhance our vital services to the community. Based on the estimated population of some 250,000 living in our community by 2015, we are in the process of building a 16,000 square foot animal care complex consisting of an adoption center, indoor/outdoor catteries, 42 indoor/outdoor adoption dog kennels with four outdoor exercise yards, retail area, cat and dog food bank, expanded low-cost spay and neuter clinic, observation/isolation units for cats and dogs. In addition, SMVHS and Allan Hancock College (AHC) are working on a collaborative effort to establish a Registered Veterinary Technician program, with academic courses offered at AHC and hands-on veterinary care instruction offered at the SMVHS spay and neuter clinic.
Read more about our PET PROJECT.To date, we have raised over $2.7 towards a total estimated project cost of $4.2 million. Construction is well underway and will be completed in phases as funds are available. Approximately $450,000 is needed to complete the elements of the project that would enable us to relocate our adoption program this summer. The SMVHS needs your help!

We hope you'll consider a gift to help the dogs and cats. One of the most valuable things you can do for the animals is to share this message with your friends. In order to meet the growing demands for our services, we must broaden our base of support. It takes a village to ensure the welfare of our animals and we truly can't do this without you. Thank you for caring.
